DJ ZI -BRINGING THE BEAT THAT MOVES YOUR FEET, LIGHTS UP YOUR SOUL AND FREES YOUR MIND!
Multi instrumentalist and singer song writer, Lee Hill IS DJ ZI, the beat master of the moment. I met Lee a few years back when he took part in a Battle of the Bands competition that took place in Hartebeespoort. That was a good day. It was the beginning of a great friendship with one of the most legit people I’ve met.
On stage, wither it be on decks, behind the drums, strumming a guitar and/or holding a mic, Lee brings an electrifying energy to any stage he finds himself playing. It only stood to reason that bringing the beat and spinning decks would be the next big journey for him. Lee soon became one of my favourite up and coming dj’s locally, playing insane Tech House beats that leaves me wishing that the party never ends!
It’s about time we all get know more about Lee Hill and DJ Zi.
Q: Tell us a bit about yourself.. Who are you?
> ** My Name is Lee and I am a singer song writer under the name "Lee Hill". I started my solo career In 2021 and eventually released my first full album "To Be Alive" in 2024.
> I also go by the name "Zi" as I am currently a Dj and music producer as well.
Q: Have you always wanted to make music...? And how old where you when you realized that's what you want to do?
> It was only when I was 16 years old that I fell in love with music, mainly the drums. The drums have been my main instrument throughout making music and performing. I have since learned to play many other instruments over the years, but the drums will always be my favourite. Songwriting was always something I did on the side, but took it more seriously once I started doing my solo career.
Q: You have your solo project, and now your DJ project. First off, Tell us a bit about your originals. Do you write your own songs? And how long have you been writing for?
> I have been writing original songs since I was 16, but was never really the main songwriter in any band I was In. I still continue writing songs even in my newfound DJ love, so branching out makes it exiting for me.
Q: You've taken the local DJ scene by storm. And, in a short time, grew immensely in terms of skill, comfort-ability and, dare I say, even in passion. What made you want to pursue the DJ life? Tell us a bit about that journey.
> After releasing my first album, I was exited but still felt a little lost in finding my own voice and identity. I knew going forward would mean to really step out of what I thought I knew. It was just by chance that a friend invited me to my first rave 8 months ago, and I have been hooked ever since! Maybe by been a drummer and always thinking about the beat, that my spirit knew that dance music is what I wanted to do,,, Dj’ing just became the by product of how I was going to achieve that. Loving the new found passion definitively!
Q: Your music and DJ JOURNEY, not to mention day to day life, keeps you super busy.... What keeps you motivated?
> The Music keeps me motivated! I feel truly free whenever I am on the stage playing,,, whether playing guitar and singing, or beating the drums,, or making Tech house beats, the freedom is priceless.
Q: Share one awkward fact/embarrassing moment (maybe at a show or something random ) about you that we don't know.
> I had written a song for our local church and was about to get on the stage to play it. I had trusted a friend to tune the guitar for me ( which he didn't ). So needless to say, the song didn't go very well with an UN-tuned guitar. Plenty of starts and stops, but eventually didn't even finish!
Q: Upcoming gigs (places /dates)
> Rubyfest in September currently.
Q: Where can we find your music? All major streaming platforms?
> You can find both Dj and solo acts on all major steaming services and socials. All links below
Q: One word of advice for new upcoming artists ?
> I have learned plenty over the years, but the best advice I can give to anyone is to "Never give up"... Keep pushing, keep persisting, just don't give up!
Q: Share one fun fact that we don't know about you.
> I am one of a twin.
Q: Share some of your Bragging rights with us.
> Not much to share, however playing drums at Woodstock and sharing a stage with Fokofpollisiekar will be a memory never to forget!
