LIKE A BOSS! - BAAS DE BEER

 A MAN ON A MISSION
'LIKE A BOSS'
CHRISTO (BAAS) DE BEER

BY RUBYSAGE

I know that I usually start off  all, or at least most off my articles by saying that this person need no introduction... but really though...Christo De Beer , commonly known a Baas De Beer really does need NO introduction.   I thought that it was high time that I reach out to this legend and visionary in the local live music scene  for a, long overdue, chat.

'Finally!', I thought, here is a man with a wealth of knowledge, and years of experience.  The kind of person who would, surly, understand the type of passion that, I too, have for the local scene.  The kind of person I could learn from.  And I wasn't wrong.  What I did not anticipate, however, is meeting someone who 1. talks as much as I do... and 2. with as much excitement.  We do speak the same language...just in different languages!

Well... the initial plan was to have a 'quick' five to ten minute chat with Christo.   We, without skipping a beat, or watching the time,  managed to turn ten minutes into a forty two minute long phone call.  The best part was that it didn't feel like an interview at all.  We chatted away as if we were just two friends who haven't talked in a while,  catching up, sharing stories and experiences,  ideas and like minded  revelations.  The ten minutes that quickly turned into close to a an hour, had Christo running late and me wondering how on earth time flew by so fast!

And the result...  an interview that everybody should have the pleasure of enjoying , not just me! But needless to say,  there was no way I was getting away with using this ,not so short, recorded interview, during my fifteen minutes of 'fame' in my Ruby's Review segment on Burg studio.Online #jollingwithseanmcbride.  I know that math has never been my strong point, but even I know, that those numbers just don't work (not without pissing everyone off , anyway...).

Christo, diligently and patiently answered the list of questions I sent to him...after our telephonic interview, but I am quite the determined one... and had to get this out there.... it was then that I realised (I said determined not fast) that I can utilize this blog to share the full interview with you as well as the Q&A!

And so, without further ado, here, for your reading AND listening pleasure, My  Q&A with Bass De Beer as well as the full interview! ( you're welcome!)

 Q&A with Baas De Beer:

Q: Regarded as quite the visionary in the local live music scene... How/when and why did it start?

 > A: Wow, high praise - don’t know about visionary. I just do what I do, in the best way I can do it.   I would rate I’m probably most relevant to this scene as the guy that started open mics at Aandklas in 2015, though obviously the journey didn’t start there. I could bore you with a chronology involving churches and bands and sokkie scenes and booking things… But it is my involvement in open mics that kicked my passion for artist development, and indeed playing a part in curating a scene that will keep good, live music alive for as long as possible, into a higher gear.

(Btw, if you want to see a real visionary, you look at someone like Kyle Ludwick and what he does with his events.)

Q: Like myself... You have a finger in every pie... What exactly do you do?

>A: Whatever I want - and then some admin
Man, I’m kinda split into 2 parts. There’s Christo, he pays bills and does business. He is a marketing and events consultant, specialising in creative brand development, content strategy, and marketing campaigns for SMME’s and music festivals, etc. There’s also the bespoke event curation element. Then we have Baas de Beer, the public persona. He entertains, mostly lately with live music and MC work. He hosts The Baascast - a podcast where he gets to talk to people Christo finds interesting, mostly in the music/entertainment sphere.

Q: Tell us a bit about your current and ongoing projects.

 >A: At the moment, I am not hosting any open mics. I feel I have to leave that to a next generation of passionate people.
My investment currently is to work with the musicians that have played the open mics, and are now aiming to turn their passion into a career.
Recently started hosting bi-monthly muso empowerment/networking kuiers [name pending]. Here 3 speakers speak for about 30min, with Q&A time after, and ample networking opportunity.
Then I book Songsmiths at Boiler Room Bar in Pretoria East.  To make penance for all the cover sets I play and book, this event is aimed 100% at original singer-songwriters, performing their own material.
It happens on the first Thursday of each month, usually with 2 acts on the night.

Q: You've written a few of your own songs. That you are planning on recording. Tell us a bit about that and when we can we expect that?

 >A:  I only very recently decided that I figure it’s a good idea to do some decent recordings of a few of my songs. I’m toying with the idea of involving a few of my mates’ studios in order to create some content while recording them, but at the moment just taking things as they happen.
Besides, I reckon my vibe translates best live, so not even 100% sure I would like to do “normal” studio recordings. We’ll see…

Q:  Any reason in particular why you've waited so long to record and release?

 >A: I sell live shows - it pays much better than streaming… Besides, I see myself more as an entertainer, not a musician - so I reckon it’s worth much more for me to have a few videos of my actual live performances on YouTube, than a perfectly curated recording on Spotify.
Don’t get me wrong, those recordings will come, but more as marketing gimmicks and vanity projects. Or just for fun and posterity.

And there you have it, straight from Mr Baascast himself!  I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Christo, (Baas ) De Beer for taking the time  to share this with us.
