SCREAM IN COLOURS ROCK THE STAGE
Rocking the Stage - Scream In Colours
Who would think to put the words 'scream' and 'Colour' together? Only the most colourful of imaginations, that's who!
Picture the scene... You are at a rock concert. After much anticipation and what feels like the longest wait ever, one of you favourite of favourite bands take the stage and what do you do? Well if you are anything like me, you scream… and if you are a lot like me, you scream in Colours!
And that is exactly the scene at Sonage on Friday, ……. Sean McBride and I were invited to the Amber Light Choices Album launch, with Scream in Colours as one of the supporting acts. It had been quite some time since I last had the opportunity to catch this band live, as I am sure you can imagine, my excitement barometer was peaking!
For me personally, Scream in Colours has to be one of THE best bands to watch live. Not only do they fill every inch of the stage with an endless supply of energy, but deliver a show to remember. Their high energy performance, their obvious delight on being there doing their thing, and the quality of entertainment will have you just as enthusiastic and jumping around on the dance floor!
After sharing their magic with the enthusiastic crowd and delivering a musically magnificent performance, in what felt like record time (time flies when you’re having fun!) I managed to catch up with Jesse a bit.
As always, I asked him and the band to answer a few questions, because if there is one band we want to know more about, it would HAVE to be Scream in Colours. All wrapped up in an array of many a loud colours …screaming for your attention.
Q: Let start off who’s who in the band and what each one does.
A: Jesse: Song writing, composition, lead Vox (vocals), rhythm Guitar.
Kyle: lead Guitar
Jarryd: Drums
Brandon: Bass, back Vox, composition, production, keys
Abi: Manager.
Q: Some background on the band. When (where, who, how) did your music journey start?
A: Jesse – Mine started in Grade 4 already when some girls asked me to sing High School Musical for them. I didn’t know the lyrics to the songs so they lent me the DVD, which I studied and learnt by heart and sang to them.
Kyle - When I was 9, my dad and older brother taught me how to play the guitar. The first song I ever learnt to play was Stand by Me, Ben E. King.
Jarryd - My music journey started at age 13, when I got my first drum kit. It was love at first ‘hit’.
Brandon - I always liked singing, so I would perform at school music evenings and talent shows.
Q: So obviously you all always wanted to make music then?
A: (In unison) Yesss Yes, collectively!
Q: Tell us a bit more about the band itself. Scream In Colours…When was the band formed, and by who? And why the name ‘Scream in Colours’?
A: Scream In Colours was originally founded by Jesse and Kyle in 2019. We started as a musical super-duo. Shortly thereafter we discovered Brandon and Jarryd. It was Jarryd who pushed us to start playing gigs. And the rest is history.
The name originated from our collective association of colours and sounds …or perhaps Colours WITH Sound.
Q: Any noteworthy shows and/or bragging right worth mentioning?
A: Well, the last show was pretty good…but we’ve been lucky to share the stage with some big names. Also, we were the first rock band to play at The Troyville Hotel and Comic Con Africa 2025.
Q: What can we expect in the (near?) future in terms upcoming gigs etc?
A: New music, and hopefully more gigs. Keep your eye on our socials.
Q: One word of advice for new musos?
A: CONSISTENCY!
Q: One fun fact that we don't know about you....
A: Abi has superpowers…we can’t say more…you know NDA and whatnot…
Q: Most embarrassing moment?
A: What embarrassing moments? We’re just here for a good time.
Q: Who writes your songs?
A: We all do. We are a collective, collaborative, it takes a village kind of band.
Q: How old are you now Jesse? (I ask this question because of those jumps on stage…Must have youth on your side still!)
A: I am 29. Turning 3O this year.
Q: How many albums, singles, EP released? And they can be found on all major streaming platforms I gather?
A: We have released 5 singles:
- Oh no she knows we know
- Hello, Mr Morgan
- Shots O’ Sherry
- Her Or Thunder
- Holy Rollers
And yes, they can be found on all streaming platforms.
And Lastly,
Q: Holy Rollers is the song of choice for this interview. Can you tell us a bit more about this song in particular? For instance when was Holy Rollers released? And what inspired/motivated you to write this song?
A: Holy Rollers was released in 2023 but was taken down by Spotify for unclear reasons. It was re-released in November 2024.
The song was inspired by something my ex partner said before she was due to leave for her new job in another country. We had just watched the Indiana Jones movies and when we were talking about all the new changes to our lives and relationship, she said “it will be a new adventure”.
That sparked the idea to write about life’s obstacles that get thrown our way like “Rolling Boulders” but if you see the value in the experience then challenges all just form part of this, the adventure called life.
And there you have in folks… Scream in Colours!
