The band Midget Submarine is neither made up of Midgets nor do they live in a submarine... In fact, and I speak under correction, but I am sure they don’t evenKNOW who lives in a pineapple under the sea.  But I will tell you what they DO know.  They know how to make a crowd go wild with their fantastic stage performance as they deliver some of the best in Indie Alternative music you’ve ever heard!

 

I bombarded Neil Branfield with a bunch of Midget Submarine related questions, as I needed to know more about this brilliant band and its high energy music masters!  Are you ready? Buckle up and enjoy the ride!

1. Q:  When was the band, Midget Submarine started? 

A:  Midget Submarine now a 4 piece Indie Alternative band that have been formed for over many years but originally by Richard Armstrong and Neil Branfield in 2013.

 

2. Q: Who are the band members and the roles they play?

A: Richard left to form a cover Band in 2024 and since then we having incorporated,  Nathan Macaulay and Keagan Kirsch onto Bass and Guitar and the sensational Camryn Turner on drums. And identify as :

3. Q: Tell us a bit more about the band dynamics.

A.    Midget Submarine now a 4 piece Indie Alternative band. 
Drummer, David Pickover, joined the band 2014.  It was with him who we recorded two EP’s with, Siren in 2016 and Vampirella in 2018, at Backline Studio with Evert Snyman and Louise Eksteen.

4. Q:  Can you give us some Midget Submarine history and share a few bragging rights?

 A:  An early incarnation of the band had the song Wiggle released as a cd on the cover of SL Magazine in 2003. Our first EP Caster with the song Hummer to Soweto that got to Number 2 on Jon Savages 5Fm Modern Rock Chart in 2013.

5. Q: What can we look forward to with new band lineup as it is today?

 A: We have started gigging at the end of 2025 and have a set of over 15 original songs ready to record New EP projected release in May of 2026.  As well as an upcoming gig in March with Later Alligator. 

 6. Q: What inspires your specific genre?

A: The band musical tastes range from Kasabian to Kiss,  The Killers to the Clash.

 

7. Q: Why the name Midget Submarine? 

A:   I heard a song by The Swell Maps; who have a song called Midget Submarine.  And the name stuck. 

 

8. Q: Where can we find your music?

A: Our music can be found on Spotify and All major streaming platforms.

 

9. Q: When writing.  Where do the topics /themes come from?

A:  Most of the songs are born from guitar riffs and mindless subjects.

 

10. Q: Share one embarrassing moment.

A: Playing Rumours Cresta and forgetting the chords to ‘Wiggle’ on stage, even though I wrote it…I just could not get it!

 

11:Q:  Advice for new upcoming bands.

A: If you want to sing love ballads, do that.  If you want to sing metal, do that.  Don’t mix the two, like Bring me the Horizon ** I have purposefully left out the accompanying emoji that was added. LOL** 

 

 Keep an eye (and ear) out for Midget Submarine!  And prepare to be have your mind blown and your world rocked like never before!
