DOING IT INDIE DOG STYLE! - INDIE DOG!
DO IT INDIE DOG STYLE

This four piece alt rock band, who obviously need no introduction, have built a large loyal fan base with their unique blend of grudge, funk and rock music.
I must have been a very good girl last year, because as 2025 was fast drawing to a close, Santa came to visit early! I got invited out to Smoking Kills Bar in Melville, where I was fortunate enough to catch up with the unforgettable, electrifying alt rock band, INDIE DOG.
As if that wasn’t fantastic and festive enough, I bumped into many familiar faces… friends whom I didn’t get to see enough of last year! Nomadic Studio’s Dylan, being one…only to learn, on that very same evening, that he is the new Indie Dog drummer.
Well let me tell you… that was evening was another BEST NIGHT ever for me!
The evening was abuzz with an air of festivity. And there I was surrounded by many shiny happy people, dancing to some fabulous tunes performed by Evert Snyman band and Indie Dog. I was having the time of my life at Smoking Kills bar…hanging out with buddies …enjoying EPIC vibes…what more could one ask for? - An Interview with Indie Dogs front man, Seb …that’s what. And I did. (Obviously).
So here you go…my Q & A with my chosen ‘ Muso of the Moment’, the voice of Indie Dog, Sebastian Howarth.
Q: My first question HAS to be, Why the name Indie dog?
A: The name is a nod to all the independent bands and artists out there slogging it out in this cut throat industry. It's incredibly hard to make forward progress and "make it" as a band with no backing other than your own spine. There aren’t a lot of major labels for which would be considered the Indie or Alternative genres. In SA, most of us are independent, not sider labels, you know, doing it all ourselves and that kind of thing. The whole industry is really built on that. So we kind of take that to heart. Also, I named my dog Indie just before we started the band.
Q: When was Indie Dog formed, and how?
A: In 2018. I met a guy, who knew some guys (you know, this person knows this person). We simply got together as a band and started practicing some jams. (In summary) We came up with the name we took it from there.
Q: Who are the Band members?
A: Our current line-up is: Seb Howarth (Vocals), Yak Anceriz (Bass), "Stabby Steve" Greyvenstein (guitar), Dylan de Wet (drums)
Q: Who writes your songs? Or is it a team effort?
A: Yeah, we write our songs mostly as a group. We're all responsible for our own parts. Sometimes things will come out as a jam at a rehearsal, other times someone brings an idea or even a fully written song and we work on it together. It’s pretty fluid. And being the grown-ups that we are, we're pretty relaxed about the inevitable changes that take place when an idea is brought to the band.
Q: What inspires you to write what you write? Are they born from Random thoughts...? Or more from Emotion, or a message?
A: Sometimes there is a specific subject or situation that a song is about. Nothing But Day is like that. But other times it’s a bit more general, like The Silk. Those lyrics are unchanged from an improv jam we did at a rehearsal. Luckily the jam was recorded and I could write the lyrics down after. But that must have just been how I was feeling at the time, embellished by the experience of having music to amplify my emotions.
In all cases though, we make sure that we have a particular message or emotion that we want to get across and we make sure that every instrument, every lyric and every nuance is aimed at getting that message across to the listener.
Q: Your music videos are very fun and creative... Who comes up with those ideas?
A: I mostly come up with the video ideas. Yak has done a couple as well and is usually pretty involved in developing the idea.
.
Q: Any upcoming gigs (places /dates)?
A: Currently our only publicly announced shows are 20 March at Loop Evolution in Ballito, KZN and 21 March at Westville Warehouse in KZN. But very soon we have a whole bunch of show dates dropping so make sure to follow us @indiedogband on all socials.
Q: Share one awkward fact/embarrassing moment about you that we don't know about.
A: The only time we've ever been flashed at a show was by a hairy 48 year old dude with the biggest beer belly I’ve ever seen.
Q: Bragging rights and /or memorable moments?
A: We have toured SA a few times playing in at least 5 of our country’s provinces and in 2025, we opened for PRIME CIRCLE in Cape Town.
Thank you INDIE DOG!
So, there you have it, if you haven’t yet, I suggest you come out from under that rock and check out some of Indie Dog's work. They have two albums out and a bunch of singles, the latest of which is VACILLATE that dropped on the 13th of February this year.
Being in the crowd at one of their shows is nothing less than one of the most memorable moment’s you’ll experience during this lifetime! Indie Dog doesn’t just perform; they connect and their stage energy isn’t just heard, it’s to be experienced!
